Not many summer jobs give students an inside look at removing stitches, running an angiogram or recording a patient’s vital signs, but Onyemaechi Onyekwu saw it all in the Department of Neurosurgery, where she worked as part of BWH Human Resources’ Summer Youth Program.
“Every day was filled with new adventures, new challenges and new patients, but the one thing that stayed the same was the warmth in the department,” said Onyekwu, a graduate of the John D. O’Bryant High School, during the program’s closing celebration last month. “As I prepare to enter my freshman year at Boston University, I feel more confident in my abilities to succeed as a result of my unique summer experience.”
Onyekwu was one of 111 students in the program who worked for six weeks over the summer in departments throughout the hospital.
“Thank you for your enthusiasm, inquisitiveness and energy,” Angela Crutchfield, HR’s director of Organizational Development & Learning, told the students during the luncheon. “Over the past six weeks, you have worked hard, gained confidence and performed your jobs well. You’ve proven to yourselves and others that you can be successful.”
HR awarded scholarships to three students in the program. Onyekwu will major in biology at BU, while the other two recipients will study pharmacy: Christine Gillis at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Otatade Ioya-Bello at Simmons College.
