BWH climbed ahead to claim the eighth spot on the U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals, jumping two spots from number 10 last year. This is the 16th consecutive year that BWH has earned a place on the list.
BWH claimed the number one spot in both Kidney Disease and Gynecology and placed in the top ten for Heart and Heart Surgery, Rheumatology and Endocrinology. The hospital ranked among the top 20 for Gastrointestinal Disorders, Orthopedics, Respiratory Disorders and Urology. BWH also placed on the list for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Cancer, Ear, Nose and Throat and Geriatric Care.
“This honor is a testament to the talents and passion of every one of our 13,000 people, who each day show their commitment to providing the best patient care, training the next generation of health care providers and advancing research to improve care,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA. “Our consistent ranking on the list of America’s Best Hospitals truly is because of our dedication to making a difference for those who depend on us.”
The magazine analyzed data from 5,453 medical centers for the 2008 rankings. Of those, only 170 hospitals ranked in one or more specialties. To receive Honor Roll distinction, which rewards “breadth of excellence,” hospitals needed to achieve high scores in at least six specialties. The America’s Best Hospitals guide ranks 170 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties and placed only 19 care facilities on its “the best of the best” Honor Roll.
BWH tied with Duke University Medical Center for the eighth spot on the Honor Roll. Massachusetts General Hospital ranked fifth on the list, and other Partners hospitals earned high honors, as well. McLean Hospital ranked fourth in Psychiatry, and Spaulding Hospital ranked seventh in Rehabilitation. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, BWH’s partner in cancer care, placed fifth in cancer services.
