Dan Palazuelos, MD, MPH, spent much of his residency in Siltepec, a community with 12,000 people in Chiapas, Mexico. As part of BWH’s Global Health Equity and Internal Medicine Residency program, Palazuelos worked with Partners In Health to bring health care to Chiapas.
Last month, Palazuelos brought a little Chiapas to BWH, such as hand-made clothing, figurines and instruments to auction off at BWH’s annual Medicine and the Muse event to raise money for the Chiapas Fund.
“So many people at BWH and HMS are involved with Chiapas. We have a wonderful exchange of knowledge where we teach new skills and gain experience with the people there,” Palazuelos said. “It’s great that we could tie this in with Medicine and the Muse.”
The event featured entertainment and an auction. Residents and attendings from the Department of Medicine shared their talents, including art work, gardening, singing and music. Dozens of items were auctioned off, including Red Sox tickets, fine wines and a summer party sponsored by Department of Medicine physicians. All proceeds go towards medicine and a community health station in Chiapas. The event raised more than $3,000 for the cause.
