As a research fellow in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Research Biology at BWH and HMS, Lina Albitar, PhD, is concerned about opportunities for mentorship and advancement for her fellow postdocs. That’s why Albitar attended last month’s National Postdoctoral Association Conference, co-sponsored by BWH’s Office for Postdoctoral and Research Careers, an office within the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity.
“The conference was targeted 100 percent towards postdocs and the issues that matter to us the most,” Albitar said.
About 300 representatives from academic centers across the country gathered for the NPA Conference at HMS to explore issues confronting the postdoctoral community, such as how institutions can best provide career and professional development programs, improve mentoring at all levels, increase diversity through hiring practices and better communicate NIH and other funding opportunities.
“We brought this conference to Boston to raise awareness of these issues at our many academic institutions to enhance the experience of postdoctoral fellows,” said Caroline Rotondi, administrative director for BWH’s Office for Postdoctoral and Research Careers. “This gives us a chance to network with each other and share ideas. We hope this will help us improve the training experience for BWH’s 850 postdocs.”
