During last month’s Take Our Children to Work Day, children who visited Plastic Surgery suited up in scrubs and masks and removed stitches from chicken wings, among other activities.
“We gave the children an opportunity to imagine how it feels to be a clinical provider,” said Christine Gallagher, practice manager for Plastic Surgery. “By allowing them to perform real job tasks in a safe and controlled environment, the children learned how our clinical staff provide patient care, such as taking out stitches and doing wound dressings, while remaining in an infection controlled environment. The kids were energized and excited. They loved it!”
This activity was one of many elements of BWH’s seventh annual Take Our Children to Work Day, when 90 children joined their parents at the hospital to learn more about health care careers. The day kicked off with a welcome breakfast, followed by tours and activities. Pathology, Radiology, Plastic Surgery and the Kessler Library were among many departments that offered guided tours and fun projects. In Pathology, children dressed in scrubs and learned about red and white blood cells.
“Next year, we hope to have even more departments offering creative ways to teach kids about different responsibilities and roles in the hospital,” said Carlen Singmaster, special events coordinator at BWH.
