Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick toured the Tower and Shapiro Cardiovascular Center this week with hospital leaders and came away impressed with BWH’s commitment to delivering quality care and its continued support of the community.
With BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD, Chief Nursing Officer Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, and Vice President of Support Services Arthur Mombourquette as his tour guides, Patrick got a first-hand look at how BWH staff care for patients in Thoracic Surgery on Tower 11 before touring the Shapiro Center. JudyAnn Bigby, MD, MBA, the former director of BWH’s Community Health Programs and now the state’s Secretary of Health and Human Services and Patrick’s top health official, was on hand for the tour, too.
“This is very impressive, not only for all this new technology and delivery of medical care, but also for the environmental impact of the building,” Patrick said following a walk-through of a Shapiro inpatient unit, the surgery suite, imaging suite and the new recovery room. “And I have a tremendous appreciation for the hospital’s commitment to the community and all the new jobs that come with it.”
In addition to detailing new imaging equipment and advances in the Shapiro’s new OR suite, Gottlieb told Patrick about BWH’s Workforce Development Initiative, through which hundreds of BWHers have advanced in their careers with training and education from entry level positions in Environmental Services to now serve as surgery and radiology technologists, patient care assistants and nurses.
Mombourquette told Patrick that the Shapiro Center is expected to be the first hospital facility in New England to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certification. The carpets come from recycled materials, and the glass is designed to bring in a maximum amount of natural light while reducing the amount of building light sent into the neighborhood at night.
“We worked very closely with the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard and all our neighbors,” Mombourquette said.
