The move of units and services to the Shapiro Center will happen in phases over the next three months. “Staging the move on multiple weekends minimizes disruptions to ongoing hospital operations,” said Debra Rogers, executive director of Cardiovascular Services at BWH. “It also prevents overtaxing of critical human resources.”
Cardiovascular inpatients will move from the Tower to Shapiro on Tuesday, May 27, the day after Memorial Day. “Our inpatient census is expected to be 20 percent lower on the day after Memorial Day than on a typical weekday,” Rogers said. “That means we have fewer patients to transfer, enabling us to maximize patient safety during the move.”
Since the OR typically does not schedule cases during three-day weekends, Central Processing will move during Memorial Day weekend and re-open in Shapiro, along with the first of the ORs, on May 27. The first surgical cases are expected to be conducted in the OR on May 27.
