BWH is improving ambulatory patient customer service with a move away from the blue cards used by patients when they check in for an ambulatory appointment, eliminating the frustration patients have reported when they do not have their blue cards and get sent to the nearest registration site to obtain a new one.
Instead, all of the ambulatory practices will be equipped with desk-top printers that turn out labels with patient identifying information, including an option to print the date of service directly from BICS or IDX. Currently, 22 practices are using this process to attach labels with accurate patient information to lab requisitions, specimens and intake forms.
Label printers can be installed at check-in desks, nursing stations, procedure areas or anywhere a blue card had been required to emboss paperwork.
All of the ambulatory practices at 850 Boylston St. successfully are using these label printers, and the ambulatory practices in the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center and the Foxborough ambulatory center at Patriot Place will have them, too.
For questions regarding labels, contact Mary D. Chapin, MS, RN, at mchapin@partners.org or 617-582-0019.
