During the last year and a half, 50 tissue donors and 22 organ donors at BWH have made possible life-saving transplants for more than 50 patients at BWH and other transplant centers throughout New England and the U.S.
“Because of the work of this hospital and the generosity of donors and donor families, the lives of these recipients will be forever altered,” said Kevin Kiely, the New England Organ Bank’s hospital relations coordinator for BWH. “Remarkably, one person can save or enhance the lives of as many as 50 people through organ and tissue donation.”
This spring is the perfect time to learn more about what it takes to become a donor, as April is National Donate Life Month.
“The easiest way to become a donor is to sign up when you renew your driver’s license,” Kiely said. “Should anything happen to you in the future, your decision to donate will be easily determined and your wishes known to your family. Declaring your decision to donate on your driver’s license can save the life of someone in need while also clarifying for your family your wish to donate.”
Today, almost 98,000 people wait for an organ that will save or greatly enhance their health. At BWH, more than 400 patients are awaiting a life-saving transplant.
