BWH is stepping up for this year’s National Kidney Foundation Walk at Franklin Park Zoo on May 18. BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, chairs this year’s walk, and Mayor Thomas Menino is the honorary chair.
Kidney disease affects 26 million Americans. According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in nine American adults has kidney disease, but most of them do not know it. Approximately 80,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant.
If walkers register by April 30 for the three-mile-walk, they will receive a BWH team T-shirt. BWH team coordinators Anne Lightfoot and Patricia Reaser said their goal is to promote awareness of kidney disease and encourage participation in the walk. The walk begins at the giraffe entrance at the zoo. All registered walkers who raise a minimum of $100 get free admission to the zoo and receive a National Kidney Foundation Walk T-shirt.
