The BWH Department of Nursing honored Sondra Holland, RN, of CWN 7, with its first BWH Nursing Ujima Award in recognition of her more than 36 years of delivering compassionate, culturally sensitive care to gynecologic oncology patients.
“Sondra is well known for her ability to build a sense of community on her unit by working in partnership with colleagues to enhance the care provided to multicultural patients and families,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services.
The award was established this year to celebrate the contributions of black nurses at BWH. Ujima is one of the seven principles of Kwanza, which focus on family, community and culture.
During the ceremony, Jabbar Bennett, PhD, administrative director of the Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers, led a prayer, and BWH Idol winner Angela Perry, Transplant finance coordinator, and the Jubilee Christian Church youth dance group performed.
