When Roodolph St. Pierre joined the BWH Food Services team in August 2006, he was also about to begin studying civil engineering at UMass-Boston. A conversation with Mallory Williams, MD, a fellow in the Department of Surgery, inspired St. Pierre to change his career direction.
“He talked with me a lot about what I want to study in school and inspired me to be an anesthesiologist because of my interest in chemistry. He is the one who really believes in me to do this,” said St. Pierre, a native of Haiti who is in his third semester studying chemistry at UMass-Boston.
Williams helped him realize he could use a chemistry degree as a path to medical school or to become a chemist. “My ultimate goal is to become a doctor and go back to Haiti,” St. Pierre said.
Boston became St. Pierre’s home in 2004, when he moved from Haiti with his family. “All of my family and friends were tormented by violence and shootings. It was too much for us, and we had to leave,” said St. Pierre, whose family joined several aunts and cousins already living in the area.
St. Pierre lives with his parents and 10-year-old brother in Hyde Park. He plans on attending medical school in the Boston area to stay close to them. “I want to be near my family. It’s better to have that support,” he said.
On the journey to becoming a doctor, St. Pierre felt it was important to be near patient care as much as possible, so he applied for a unit coordinator position on Tower 10B. He began in his new role last week.
As he begins another semester at school, St. Pierre is becoming more confident in what he’s learning. “My biggest fear in college was doing the labs. My hands shook. I feel better about it now,” he said. “It’s not that hard now.”
He continues to enjoy his role at BWH and learning something new each day. “There really is no better place to work,” he said.
