Maureen Debler, RN, of the Coronary Care Unit, had tears in her eyes as she accepted a Starfish Award from the family of one of her former patients.
They described the compassionate care she delivered to their father as his condition worsened. One of his daughters recalled, “Maureen kept our family fully updated and involved and took a great deal of patience and time to describe what was happening. Her kind words, gentle smile and calm manner were very reassuring to dad’s grandchildren. It was hard for them to see their papa so sick.”
Debler was one of eleven BWHers honored last week with Starfish Awards for compassion, care, advocacy, respect and mentoring. The ceremony drew tears and laughter as each recipient’s story was told.
Debra Cartwright, RN, of Care Coordination in Thoracic, was honored for welcoming a teenager with a rare form of cancer to Thanksgiving with her family. Amy Boughan, MS, RN, ANP, nominated phlebotomist Merdis Clemons for taking the extra step to help a patient complete a complex series of labs for an NIH clinical trial.
Barbara Odaka, PT, PT clinical supervisor in the Department of Rehabilitation Services, nominated Alisa Finkel, MS, PT, for her compassion towards a paraplegic patient who was a farmer from the Dominican Republic. “She advocated for the patient’s needs and worked with him until he was ready to be safely discharged,” said Odaka.
Kim Ternavan, MS, MBA, RN, nurse manager on Tower 7AB, thanked all of the recipients and nominators. “Thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty,” she said. “The Starfish Award is one way that we can honor you.”
