BWH and South Shore Hospital share a clinical affiliation in certain services and programs, but the connection doesn’t end there. The hospitals also are linked by brothers Luis Hernandez and Antonio Cartegena, who work as valets at BWH and SSH in Weymouth, respectively, to ensure patients, employees and visitors safely reach their destinations.
“They are so friendly,” said Elena Sierra, MPH, RN, director of BWH and South Shore Hospital Program Development, who frequently commutes to both hospitals. “Both are so helpful to patients and staff.”
Cartegena and Hernandez enjoy helping people and making patients’ hospital visits easy from the start.
Since he began his job as valet parking manager 12 years ago, Hernandez has not missed a day of work. He makes sure to acquaint himself with each patient. “I’m familiar with everybody. I like to take care of patients and give great customer service,” said Hernandez.
His efforts and bright smile are noticed. “He’s an unbelievable employee,” said Robert Chicarello, director of Security and Parking at BWH. “He’s very conscientious, he’s always here, and he always has a smile on his face.”
At South Shore, Cartegena is always ready to lend a helping hand. “Once, a lady having a strong labor contractions drove up to me. I ran to get a wheelchair and brought her up to Labor and Delivery as her water broke,” said Cartegena, who has worked as a valet at SSH for seven years. “After a few years, I see people like her come back to have another baby at the hospital. I love seeing families created in the community.”
